Open Letter

To all of you who consider Spotlight Ballroom and Midtown Stomp to be an important part of your life, whether it’s an occasional place to come and enjoy dancing or a place you consider home, we would like to share an open letter with all of you.  Most of our messages are about fun and loving dance, but we want to share a message about the business with you.

We have survived!  We made it through the pandemic.  We were able to keep our teachers, the heart of our business, employed through a marathon of unpredictable conditions and uncertainty.  The business has changed in some key ways and we face a new set of challenges in the months and years to come.  We are asking ourselves what our values are and how we ensure a future for Spotlight.  We want to enable our instructors and staff to feel like they have the ability to grow and also to not feel like they are sacrificing too much in order to continue doing what they love.

There have been a lot of changes.  More people are renting space at the studio now than in the past and our admin team is more efficient.  But, as time ticks on, expenses like utilities, the lease, expenses around the money borrowed to get us through the pandemic and the essential upgrades to the studio all add up.  We increased prices two years ago coming out of the pandemic, which were essential to compensate for increased expenses.  Since before the pandemic, we have not been able to make substantial changes in compensation for our employees.

We are going to roll out price increases to most of our packages.  It is our intention to pass that on to all of our employees with a 10% raise for anyone who has been on staff for more than six months.  We have updated pricing on our websites and will be increasing membership prices for all payments starting in March.

We are also going to open a couple of social membership scholarships for those who want to dance, but find money to be a limiting factor in their ability to dance at the studio.  Our goal is for everyone to be able to come dance with us. If you would like to contribute to a scholarship fund for those who are financially unable to dance or if you would like to be considered for a scholarship please email

The most common pricing changes are social dance pricing is increasing to $12 for DJ’d dances, $15-20 for live band nights with most nights at $18.  Social memberships will continue to be $75/month.  Anyone who is enrolled in the $50 legacy social membership will retain that pricing.  Showcase pricing will remain the same for this upcoming showcase.

Thank you all, and a huge thank you to everyone who we love seeing on the dance floor.
