Begin with songs that mean something to you

Your first-dance song does not have to come from a wedding playlist. Start with music you already enjoy: a song connected to an early date, something you listen to together or a recording that simply feels right to both of you.

Make a short list rather than searching for one perfect answer immediately. Listen to each song all the way through. Consider the lyrics as well as the mood; a romantic-sounding chorus may be part of a story you would not choose for your wedding.

Compare the actual recordings

A live performance, an acoustic cover and the original recording of the same song can feel very different. Choose the version you are considering and save a link so you can find it again at your lesson.

Notice the opening, changes in the music and the ending. Is there a long introduction before you would want to move? Does the pace change? You do not need to analyze the music yourself. These are useful things to discuss with your instructor.

Try moving together

Play each option and spend a little time moving together. This is not a test of whether you can already dance. Notice whether you enjoy the feeling of the music and whether you can imagine sharing it in front of your guests.

Do not rule out a song just because you cannot picture the steps. Bring your shortlist to a lesson. Your instructor can help you explore what the music offers and whether the dance you have in mind suits it.

Agree on the version and the finish

You can discuss using part of a song instead of the full recording. Decide where you would like to start and finish, then coordinate any edit with the person handling your wedding music. Rehearse with the exact version they will play.

If a live band will play your first dance, ask about its arrangement and how the ending will work. Share those details with your instructor. Small decisions about the music are easier to settle before you have practiced the same ending many times.

Still choosing? Come in anyway

A final song choice is not a requirement for Spotlight’s free introductory private lesson. Bring two or three possibilities, or tell us you are still looking, and use the visit to start figuring out your dance.
