For your first lesson, keep it practical

Choose clothes that let you move comfortably and shoes you feel steady wearing. You do not need to arrive dressed for the wedding. If you are unsure about footwear for the studio, ask when arranging your introductory lesson.

Bring your wedding date, if you have one, and a link to the song or songs you are considering. It also helps to know what you would like from the dance: a few comfortable moves, a routine or simply help getting started. You can come in without a finished plan.

Bring both people’s questions

Talk before the visit about what each of you hopes to learn. Mention previous dance experience, any movements you would rather avoid and how much practice you can realistically do between lessons.

You may also want to ask how to practice a movement you have just learned, what to focus on next or how to work with the space available at home. Leave the lesson knowing what you are trying to practice, rather than trying to remember every detail at once.

Test wedding shoes and movement

As you get closer to the day, arrange a rehearsal that takes your wedding clothes into account. Spotlight’s wedding lesson guidance recommends bringing shoes and items such as skirts, veils or jackets that could affect the choreography.

You may not want to bring the actual outfit. Discuss what would help you check its shape and movement. Consider skirt length, jacket fit and whether an outfit changes how you take a step or turn. Tell your instructor about anything that feels awkward so you can discuss an adjustment.

Check the reception details too

Ask your venue about the space you will have for the dance, including where guests and furniture will be. Share useful details with your instructor rather than assuming the reception floor will feel like the studio.

Confirm the exact song version with your DJ or band. Talk through how you will be introduced, where the music begins and how you will finish. A rehearsal is a good opportunity to notice a missing cue while there is still time to explain it to the people involved.
