Start by trying a lesson

You do not have to choose a wedding dance package before you know what a lesson feels like. Spotlight Ballroom offers a free half-hour introductory private lesson at our West Sacramento studio. You can meet an instructor, talk about your first dance and try some steps.

That first visit is a useful way to ask the questions that a price list cannot answer. What would feel comfortable for the two of you? How much of the song do you want to dance to? Would you enjoy a routine, or would you rather learn a few movements you can use together?

Make the lesson about your dance

A private lesson gives you time with an instructor to work on your own questions. Perhaps one of you has danced before and the other has not. Perhaps you both want something simple, or you have an entrance and a particular moment in the song in mind. Say so at the beginning.

You can bring a song without having a dance picked out. You can also arrive without a song. Your instructor can help you work out a starting point instead of asking you to solve everything before you come in.

Build a plan around your wedding

After the introduction, your instructor can recommend lessons around your timeline and budget. Share your wedding date, the time you realistically have for practice and any travel that will interrupt the weeks before the wedding.

Use the conversation to decide what matters most. It might be feeling comfortable moving together, preparing a particular routine or getting help with a parent dance as well as your first dance. The plan should reflect those priorities.

Bring the practical details into rehearsal

As the wedding approaches, rehearsal is a chance to check your dance with the shoes and clothing that affect your movement. A good idea on an open studio floor may need adjusting for a skirt, jacket or smaller reception dance floor.
