About Bachata

Dance Vision describes bachata as a romantic, expressive Dominican partner dance, danced to guitar music about love and heartache.[8]

Dance Vision notes that it was frowned on under the Trujillo dictatorship before it won wider acceptance. Its footwork has moved from an original forward-and-back step to the side-to-side motion most people know today, and Dance Vision describes several modern styles, from ones that keep the simple Dominican rhythm to ones that borrow from tango and bolero.[8]

Feel the count

Bachata has an eight-count basic that steps side to side, with a tap or hip accent on counts 4 and 8.[5][4]

  1. 1
  2. 2
  3. 3
  4. 4

The paler beat (4) is a pause, hold or tap rather than a full step. Time signature 4/4. NDCA Nightclub tempo (2026 rules): 30 bars a minute (about 120 beats a minute)[2]. The slider runs from a slow practice speed (60% of the low end of that range, a way to learn a new pattern, not a rule) up to the fastest. The click sounds only after you press play.

  • NDCA allows music directors to vary Nightclub tempos by 2 bars a minute either way, which is 112 to 128 beats a minute.[2]
  • Social Dance Community says most tracks run 120–160 beats a minute: traditional Dominican tracks typically 150–160, and modern and sensual tracks 120–130 on average.[6]

Where it comes from

Bachata is a Dominican music and dance form that grew out of the rhythmic bolero blended with Afro-Antillean genres including son, cha-cha-cha and merengue. UNESCO added it to its Representative List of intangible heritage in 2019.[1]

The music began in poor, working-class rural areas of the Dominican Republic and was looked down on for decades. Juan Luis Guerra’s 1992 album Bachata Rosa and Aventura’s success in the 2000s raised its profile.[9]

Wikipedia dates the social couple dance to the 1960s in the Dominican Republic.[5]

Where people dance it

Bachata is danced worldwide at festivals, socials and nightclubs, and the sensual style is especially popular in Europe.[3]

In the Dominican Republic it is part of everyday celebrations and community gatherings, and is often learned informally from a young age.[1]

Styles of bachata

Dominican (traditional) bachata is the original style. It is footwork-focused with fast syncopations, danced in an open hold, usually to guitar-led tracks.[3][4]

Bachata moderna developed outside the Dominican Republic, in Western dance schools, in the late 1990s. It uses side-to-side patterns with ballroom-style touches such as dips.[5]

Bachata sensual was created in Cádiz, Spain, by Korke Escalona and Judith Cordero. It stresses body waves and isolations and a close connection over footwork.[4]

Sensual and Dominican bachata share one foundation: 4/4 music with a side-to-side basic and a tap on count 4.[4]
