About Hustle

Dance Vision describes the hustle as a fast, energetic partner dance born in 1970s American disco. It moves quickly and smoothly, built on turns and spins for both partners.[9] The follower spins almost without stopping, to upbeat pop and disco music.[10]

Dance Vision groups it with the swing dances and compares its patterns to West Coast Swing, while it keeps its own disco-nightclub character.[10]

Feel the count

The basic is three counts, counted & 1 2 3, danced over 4/4 music.[5][6][4]

  1. 1
  2. 2
  3. 3
  4. 4

Time signature 4/4. NDCA Nightclub tempo (2026 rules): 30 bars a minute (about 120 beats a minute)[2]. The slider runs from a slow practice speed (60% of the low end of that range, a way to learn a new pattern, not a rule) up to the fastest. The click sounds only after you press play.

  • NDCA allows music directors to vary Nightclub tempos by 2 bars a minute either way.[2]
  • Richard Powers’ DJ guide for social dancing gives 110–125 beats a minute, with a sweet spot of 118.[7]
  • SwingShoes gives 100–130 beats a minute and says slower R&B tracks are also used.[3]

Where it comes from

Wikipedia places its start in the South Bronx in late 1972, among Puerto Rican teenagers, spreading through New York City and beyond by 1976.[4]

A studio history instead dates it to about 1970 in New York bars, so the sources disagree on when it began.[5]

Encyclopedia.com says it can be traced to the hip motion of salsa combined with the footwork of swing. Van McCoy’s instrumental The Hustle reached number one in July 1975.[1]

Where people dance it

Hustle was danced in New York discotheques at the height of the disco era in the 1970s.[1]

Today it is danced in social dance clubs, at competitive dance events and in dance studios.[11]

Forms of hustle

The original hustle was a six-count pattern. Dancers later shortened it to a three-count basic so they could fit in more tricks.[3]

Wikipedia lists the original Latin Hustle (six steps, faster with fancier turns), Spanish Hustle (five steps, no turns), New York Hustle (the modern partner form) and line-dance versions.[4]
