About Jive

Dance Vision describes jive as a high-energy, fun dance that lets the whole body show that mood, with fast footwork, quick kicks and turns at a brisk tempo.[5]

The basic mixes slow and quick steps. Partners can turn on their own or together, riding the momentum of each turn, and the music drives the movement.[5] It draws on several swing styles and is known for quick feet and playful tricks.[9]

Feel the count

The basic runs 1-2, 3-a-4, 5-a-6: a rock step, then two compact chassés. Dance Vision writes it as 1 2 3a4 5a6. The accents go on the even counts, which is why beats 2 and 4 are marked.[3][5][6]

  • NDCA lists 43 bars a minute (172 beats).[4]
  • Dance Vision gives 160–180 beats a minute as the typical range, and Ballroom Pages says beginners should practice below competition speed.[5][3]

Where it comes from

Jive came out of the United States in the early 1930s, created by African American dancers to swing-era music. The name comes from African American slang.[10]

American servicemen brought lindy hop and jitterbug to Europe around 1940. Americans called the style swing, while British dancers called it jive.[10]

The first ISTD Latin syllabus in 1947 included American swing under the name jive.[11]

Where it appears: International Latin[1]

Where people dance it

Jive is one of the five International Latin competition dances.[1]

It is danced at ballroom competitions and showcases, in rhythm practice and in upbeat social dancing, and occasionally at weddings as a playful moment rather than a first dance.[3]

International and American versions

Jive is the International Latin dance; East Coast Swing is its American Rhythm relative.[2]

Ballroom Pages says jive is more formally codified for competition, typically faster and more syncopated with compact chassés, while East Coast Swing is a more relaxed social dance.[3]

NDCA’s 2026 tempo is 43 bars a minute for jive against 35 for swing.[4]
