About Samba

Dance Vision calls samba high-energy and fun-loving, with a spirit and rhythm that come from Brazilian carnival.[4]

Its signature is a bounce through the hips, knees and ankles: the legs flex as the weight moves toward the front of the foot, then straighten as it comes back to center. In the basic, one foot steps forward on a bent knee and the other closes with pressure but without taking full weight, and that small close makes the bounce. The competitive International form refines the carnival dance into a ballroom style.[4]

Feel the count

Samba’s signature rhythm is 1 a 2, where the “a” is a short, quick beat. NDCA counts two beats to the bar.[3][2]

Time signature 2/4. WDSF competition tempo (2018 rules): 50–52 bars a minute (about 100–104 beats a minute)[1]. The slider runs from a slow practice speed (60% of the low end of that range, a way to learn a new pattern, not a rule) up to the fastest. The click sounds only after you press play.

  • NDCA lists 50 bars a minute (100 beats).[2]
  • Dance Vision writes samba in 4/4 at about 96 beats a minute.[4]

Where it comes from

Brazilian samba grew out of Afro-Brazilian communities in Bahia in the 1800s and later spread to Rio de Janeiro. It is most prominent at Carnival.[8]

Ballroom samba took its rhythmic actions and energy from Brazilian carnival dancing, which is traditionally danced solo, and it became popular in Western Europe and the United States in the early 1940s.[4][9]

Samba was one of four dances in the first ISTD Latin American syllabus, created in 1947.[10]

Where it appears: International Latin · also listed by NDCA as an additional American-style dance[1][2]

Where people dance it

Samba is one of the five International Latin competition dances.[1]

It is danced in ballroom studios, at social events and in competitions. It suits upbeat, choreographed moments better than slow romantic songs and is not typical at casual socials where salsa or swing dominate.[9]

International and American versions

Ballroom Pages separates four things called samba: the competitive International Latin dance, a social ballroom samba, the Brazilian solo samba no pé and the Brazilian partner dance samba de gafieira.[3]

NDCA lists samba in International Latin at 50 bars a minute and again, at the same figure, in its Nightclub group.[2]
