Bolero is an American Rhythm dance, a group whose dances do not progress along the line of dance, though one guide says its gliding action covers more floor than rumba.[9][10]

About Bolero

Dance Vision describes bolero as a hybrid that joins the strengths of two dances for an unusually smooth flow.[4]

It moves like rumba, on rumba’s box, but adds the rise and fall of the waltz, of the feet and of the body, for a wave-like quality, and its steps slide and glide.[4]

Feel the count

Bolero is counted slow-quick-quick, where the slow lasts two counts, and the basic runs over eight counts before it repeats. The music accent falls on count 1.[4][5][3]

Time signature 4/4. NDCA American Rhythm tempo (2026 rules): 23 bars a minute (about 92 beats a minute)[1]. The slider runs from a slow practice speed (60% of the low end of that range, a way to learn a new pattern, not a rule) up to the fastest. The click sounds only after you press play.

  • An older NDCA table reproduced by Dance Central lists 24–26 bars a minute (96–104 beats).[6]
  • Dance Vision says about 96 beats a minute, the same speed as International rumba.[4]

Where it comes from

Ballroom bolero is one of the five American Rhythm dances, and it is a separate thing from the Spanish bolero, a dance of 1750–1772 in 3/4 time.[1][11]

It shares its name with the Cuban bolero song, which began in Santiago de Cuba in the 1880s and is generally in 4/4.[12]

Where it appears: American Rhythm[1][2]

Where people dance it

Ballroom competitions (grouped with the other American Rhythm dances), studios, practice parties, showcases and sometimes wedding first dances.[5]

NDCA counts it among the five American Rhythm dances and requires all five at its featured professional championships.[1]

International and American versions

Bolero exists only in American Rhythm. The International Latin list has no bolero.[2]

Compared with American rumba, bolero has deeper knee action and a waltz-like rise and fall, and it is the slowest of the three rumba-type dances.[3]
